PHOTO: Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca Province, Spain
This is a photo of Ciudad Rodrigo (literally: Rodrigo City) in the province of Salamanca in North-western Spain. When I took this photo I think I was looking South-South-West towards the city with the river Agueda behind me.
We were on our way to the city of Salamanca when we branched off the main road for a rest stop and found this little gem of history.
At the time of taking the photo I was struck by a tranquil feeling in the gentle warmth of the Springtime sun as it bathed the surroundings. I was particularly drawn to the red and yellow spray of flowers growing in the natural habitat of the field outside the city.
This photo shows the walls of the city with the Cathedral of Santa Maria inside the walls. The city was initially built around 1160 CE and continued its development into the fourteenth century. The site on which the city is built is believed to have been occupied since the Neolithic Age and may once have been an ancient Celtic settlement.
Inside the city walls lies an amazing work of stone architecture which is still functional today.
