PHOTO: City Skyline, Singapore

This is a photo of the city skyline in Singapore.

For me this is a good representation of empire in our modern world.

Throughout its history Singapore has been a maritime emporium and trading post which has been at the centre of disputes between multiple empires. Within the global trade arena Singapore has been known as one of the four “Asian Tigers” (the rapidly growing and developing economies of East Asia).

The city-state is an excellent example of the veneer showing “what is good about humanity”: it is a clean, peaceful and polite place populated by a multi-cultural society generally characterised by tolerance and egalitarianism. That said, when wandering its streets one cannot help recognizing the celebration of affluence as crowds of wealthy people flock to the many luxury shopping malls and venues around the city.

Singapore is a very interesting destination for a short break or career relocation (if you like the heat).

I chose this photo because of the security camera in the bottom right of the frame – it made me theme this photo: “Empire is Watching”.
